What Is A Vinyl Liner Swimming Pool

Let’s first discuss what a vinyl liner is. It is a material that is manufactured from virgin material (never used, not reprocessed) and is treated with a fungicide to inhibit bacteria growth. This material is available in many different colors and pattern designs. It is also available in different thickness, example; 20 mil vs. 27 mil (this is thicker material).

This liner can be made in any shape or size. The liner is installed against panels of a pool which could be manufactured from Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, Polymer, Stainless Steel and still in some cases Wood. The liner offers a very smooth surface which is very pleasing to your feet.

A vinyl liner pool can be manufactured to look a lot like a concrete pool but is a lot less expensive. If you get tired of looking at the same liner you have in your pool for the last 15 years, you can easily change to a new pattern. With today’s technology, this type of pool can be designed to fit virtually any size or shape you want.

These pools can be designed to offer you different depth options. The shallow end could be 42” or 48”. The three most popular deep end depths are 5’, 6’ or 8’ (at least 8’ is needed for diving) but other depths are available. With today’s standards, if you want a pool to have an 8’ deep end, the pool size must be at least 16’ wide and 32’ long.

Vinyl Liner Maintenance

The liner in your pool is a very durable item designed to give you many years of enjoyment. Proper water chemistry is very important to the life of your liner. While the title of this article is Vinyl Liner Maintenance, the bad maintenance practices outlines here will also cause problems for concrete and fiberglass pools.

When using granular chlorine, if you pour in a cup in one location, it could fall to the bottom and bleach the liner. That bleach area will start to become very thin and develop holes. Your liner will then start to lose water. Broadcast it slowly around your pool and brush off any that falls to the bottom. Be sure to follow all safety instructions found on the label.

If you use chlorine tablets and do not use a chlorine feeder and put them in your skimmer basket, this could cause your liner to bleach just below the skimmer and become very thin and start to leak. You should use a chlorine feeder for these tablets. Tablets will tend to lower the pH and Alkalinity levels of your pool water. Your liner will lose its elasticity if these levels stay low and the liner will become brittle and could split.

You should have your local pool dealer check your pool water on a regular basis so you can maintain proper levels. Test strips are also available for you to use if you are not close to a pool store. We have stories of customers who have their original liner in there pool from over 25 years ago. You may also be able to do this with proper care and water chemistry.

What Options Do I Want To Add To My Pool

Now that you have made the decision to install an inground vinyl liner swimming pool, you have many option choices. In the deep end of your pool, you may want to install a Swimout or In Pool Seat. One item would take the place of an 8’ panel and the other a 6’ panel. The Swimout is 8’ in length and you have room to sit in, lean back in and steps to exit the pool. The In Pool Seat is 6’ and designed for two people to sit in. Both of these items extend beyond the pool edge.

All of the above options are also available in a version that is covered by the liner. This gives you a more built in look.

What can you do in the shallow end? Maybe you do not like the normal white entry way step. This step can be replaced by liner steps that can fit into the corner, extend the width of the pool or be placed in the center of the shallow end. The top liner step can also be manufactured larger to make a sun lounger area.

Would you like lighting for your pool? Some manufacturers offer a Dry Niche Light. This light will have a lid like a skimmer and you get to the light bulb by lifting the lid from your pool deck. This type of light will use a regular flood light bulb. A LED version is also now available with over 10 color combinations. The LED light offers a remote just like gas logs might have.

What about pool shape. This is only limited by your imagination. Most liner manufactures now have equipment in place to do just about any size or shape you want. The many different shapes are called by different names from the manufacturers. Names like, Rectangle, Grecian, Lazy L, True L, Freedom Lake, Chesdin, 4’ Radius Corners, 2’ Reverse Radius Corners, etc. You no longer have to settle for the box shape pool. Discuss these many design options with your local Medallion Pool Dealer.

Upgrade Your Existing Vinyl Liner Swimming Pool

Many people believe that once your pool is installed there is no way to make any upgrades or improvements. That is no longer the case. Below are just a few examples of what is possible with modern design and manufacturing techniques.

Depending on the age of your pool, some of the older pools that were installed did not have a walk in step. They usually only had a ladder. Now that you are getting a little older, that ladder may not be easy to climb in or out.

There are stairs that fit into the corner of your pool or across the entire shallow end and the new liner will cover this step. No more ladder. A hand rail could also be installed for more stability in entering or exiting your pool. You may even have room to add a lounging area as well. You would not have to destroy any of your pool deck to install this step or rail.

Maybe you have a pool with an 8’ deep end but that end of the pool is not used much anymore. With the new liner change, you now have the opportunity to fill that deep end into a more shallow area for playing games, like volleyball. Your local pool installer will be able to discuss these options with you. With the new liner change, now also is a good time to have new skimmer and return face plates installed.

Does your pool have a light? If you do not use it or it no longer works, with the new liner install, that light could be eliminated. When it is time to install a new liner, many options are available to you to really change the look of your pool. Your friends and family will love the new look.

Tired Of Diving In Your Swimming Pool And Want To Play More Games?

You may have installed your vinyl liner swimming pool years ago when your children were smaller. At that time, they wanted a pool with a deep end for diving. Unless you had a very large swimming pool, this left you very little shallow end.

Now as time marches on, the children have moved out and started their own lives. Your swimming pool is still there with the deep end but you do not dive. You prefer a pool that does not have a deep end. You would like to be able to use your whole pool to stand or play in.

When you are ready to install a new liner, that deep end can be filled in and your new deep end could have a depth of 5’or 6’. The deep end is normally filled in with gravel and that is covered with vermiculite. You now will have more of a usable swimming pool. Space will now allow you to play volleyball, basketball or any other type of game in your swimming pool.

You will find out that your kids now will enjoy your pool more when they visit with you. If you now have grandchildren, they will love being able to use the whole pool and play games.
