When it is cold outside and you are unable to use your swimming pool, you just never think about giving a swimming pool gift to your husband, wife or friend. That would be a great time to give them that gift at Christmas. You have many options to consider.

Does your husband or wife take care of the pool? Do they manually vacuum the pool? A great gift would be an automatic pool cleaner. Many options are available with very affordable prices. Take a visit to your local swimming pool store to learn more about these cleaner options.

Do you or a good friend have a spa? A great gift would be a mini salt system to save them time and money and make their spa experience more enjoyable. No odors or burning eyes. Spend less time on maintenance and more time relaxing.

Do you or your friend have a pool that does not have a light? A great gift would be battery operated lights. No need for an electrician and very affordable. No installation required. Just install the battery and place in the pool. These are just a few examples of gifts you might want to consider for your family member or friend.

The Gizzmo

The Gizzmo

The Gizzmo is designed to absorb the expansion of water freezing in the skimmer of your swimming pool. It is an American made product. There are currently three types of Gizzmo: Regular, Super, and Super Duper Ultra.

The Regular Gizzmo is 9 inches long and installs in short skimmers. These skimmers are found on most above ground pools and some inground pools. It has 1-1/2 inch threads and a bar to grip on top for easy installation and removal.

The Super Gizzmo is 16 inches long and is designed for deep skimmers. These skimmers are found on most inground pools and some above ground pools. It has both 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch threads. This allows one product to fit multiple types of skimmers. It also has the same bar grip as the Regular Gizzmo.

The Super Duper Ultra Gizzmo is the same size and has all the same features as the Super Gizzmo but with an added feature. It contains an integrated blowout tube. This allows you to use compressed air to blow the water out of your skimmer lines should that be necessary for your pool.

For all models, use Teflon tape on the threads for a professional seal. Teflon tape is a very thin white tape used to wrap threads on pipe and fittings to improve the seal. Gizzmo’s are designed for single season use and are recyclable.

What is Synergy?

Synergy may be a new name for you in sanitizers. It has been around for several years and was previously known as Simplicity, but most people either go with the granular chlorine, tablet chlorine, or have switched to the salt system (an extremely easy to use system that you can read more about by clicking here). While all of those are good, the Synergy System is a 3 step process to start then it is a very simple 2 step process, once a week treatment. Almost all customers that have tried the Synergy System are highly satisfied. They like the ease of use, water clarity, cost effectiveness and the all in a box packaging.

There is a large reduction of problems with the Synergy System. Your water is less cloudy and it reduces algae. You also use very little PH and Alkalinity as compared to other sanitizing systems. This System means a lot less work for you.

When you start the season you will add Initiator directly to your skimmer. IMPORTANT: If you have been on Baquacil or any other chemical that does not have a chlorine base in it you must get all of that chemical out of your pool first. It takes one 12.5 lb bottle per 10,000 gallons of water in your pool. This should last you for a typical swimming season of approximately 4 months. If you keep your pool open longer you may have to add it again. A large box of Synergy is made for pools of approximately 20,000 gallons and should last up to 10 weeks. After 2 weeks which gives the Initiator time to circulate in you pool, you should take a sample of water to your pool store to have it tested for the proper dosage of initiator. You need to have a 1.0-1.5 ppm sanitizer (free chlorine) level. If everything is correct then it’s time to start the Synergy System.

The large box contains 2 large containers of Synergy Tablets, 10 - 1 lb. bottles of Synergy Clear and test strips. You simply put the tablets in a floater or an automatic chlorinator once a week. Then you pour the clear into the pool at a rate of ½ a bottle per 10,000 gallons of water in your pool. That’s it. It’s only once a week. The Synergy System is easier on your liner, clothes and hair. The Synergy System also helps to eliminate most of the irritating chloramines and other contaminants that bother the swimmer’s eyes and nose and the water feels very soft on your skin. Then relax and enjoy your pool with sparkling clear water, less maintenance and less maintenance chemicals.

Vinyl Liner Maintenance

The liner in your pool is a very durable item designed to give you many years of enjoyment. Proper water chemistry is very important to the life of your liner. While the title of this article is Vinyl Liner Maintenance, the bad maintenance practices outlines here will also cause problems for concrete and fiberglass pools.

When using granular chlorine, if you pour in a cup in one location, it could fall to the bottom and bleach the liner. That bleach area will start to become very thin and develop holes. Your liner will then start to lose water. Broadcast it slowly around your pool and brush off any that falls to the bottom. Be sure to follow all safety instructions found on the label.

If you use chlorine tablets and do not use a chlorine feeder and put them in your skimmer basket, this could cause your liner to bleach just below the skimmer and become very thin and start to leak. You should use a chlorine feeder for these tablets. Tablets will tend to lower the pH and Alkalinity levels of your pool water. Your liner will lose its elasticity if these levels stay low and the liner will become brittle and could split.

You should have your local pool dealer check your pool water on a regular basis so you can maintain proper levels. Test strips are also available for you to use if you are not close to a pool store. We have stories of customers who have their original liner in there pool from over 25 years ago. You may also be able to do this with proper care and water chemistry.

How Do I Put Chlorine Tablets Into My Pool

clock July 7, 2016 07:00 by author medallionpools |

Many pool sanitizer options are now available for your swimming pool. If your choice is chlorine tablets or chlorine sticks, what is the best way to get the product in the water? Chlorine tablets are usually available in 1” or 3” size. The stick is normally a 3” in diameter but much longer than the tablet.

You might think you would put them into your skimmer or use a floater. If you place them into your skimmer, chlorine residue could cause your liner to turn white in front of your skimmer. It can also damage the skimmer itself, your pump, your filter, and your plumbing lines. You also have no way to control the amount of chlorine going in your pool. The floater is a better choice. By using the floater, you may want to use the 1” size tablets. Since you do not have water rapidly going over the tablets to dissolve them, the 1” size would be better.

By trying to place them inside your pumps strainer basket, you could be doing harm to your equipment and still have no way to control the amount of chlorine getting into your pool. You have to estimate how many tablets or sticks to put in the basket. They would dissolve quickly and now your pool will have too high a chlorine reading.

The best way to use chlorine tablets or sticks, is with an Automatic Chlorinator. This unit would be installed in the pool return liner. If you have a pool heater, it should be installed after the heater. The chlorinator has a control value that you can regulate the proper amount of chlorine getting into your pool and you are not harming your liner or pool equipment.
