With the technology available today, just about any size or shape is possible with a vinyl liner pool. Just sketch out your thoughts and meet with a swimming pool company. A lot also will depend on the size of the area you want to install a pool. Is the area flat or on a slope? Can you get to the area and have room for a machine to do the excavation and backfill?
The depth of the deep end should also be a consideration. If you want a pool with an 8’ deep end, the minimum size pool would need to be 16’ x 32’. With this size pool, you really want to dive a lot because you do not have a lot of shallow end to stand in.
Do you like to swim laps? If so, maybe a lap pool might be a consideration. They can be any size or width. Some possible sizes might be; 10’ x 50’ or 10’ x 60’. The depth can be one level. The lap pool can be designed to meet your needs.
If you are looking more for a pool to play games in, like volleyball, then you should consider a deep end pool no deeper than 5’. If the deep end were 6’ deep, the average person would need to be about 6’ 2” to stand up without water going over their nose. When you meet with your local pool dealer, all the above listed areas should be discussed to your satisfaction.
