Types of Pool Covers for the Dreaded Winter Months

Every year everyone dreads closing up their pool for the winter months, but they want to make sure they have the best cover that fits their pool needs. There are several types of covers we will discuss that will allow you to make the right choice for your family.

The three types of covers going to be standard tarp covers, safety covers, and automatic pool covers.

Tarp Covers:

Pros:

  • Will keep the rain water and debris out of the pool
  • Easy to install
  • Aboveground tarp is usually held down by a cable and winch
  • Inground tarp is usually held down by water tubes – stay away from cinder blocks

Cons:

  • Have to replace every year
  • Can’t walk on them
  • Typically only offered in round, oval, or rectangle
Safety Covers: Mesh / Solid

Pros:

  • Mesh will allow water to drain into the pool but keeps debris out
  • Mesh is light weight
  • Custom made to fit your pool
  • Solid will keep debris out

Cons:

  • Solid either needs a mesh panel or cover pump to get water off the cover
  • Solis is heavy weight
Automatic Pool Covers:

Pros:

  • Open or close with a simple turn of a key
  • Acts as a horizontal fence
  • Prevents the evaporation of both water and chemicals
  • Keeps dirt and debris out which reduces the need of cleaning
  • Custom made to fit almost any shape
  • Can walk on them
  • Keeps animals out

Cons:

  • Initial cost of auto covers
  • Maintenance to keep them running smoothly
